BID is currently hiring a Gum Buster Machine Operator. This is a seasonal, part-time postion, through September. The schedule for this postion is  two to three days a week, in the morning, for about three hours each day.  Please review the Job Description below and information on how to apply. Job Description

Beautification and Cleaning Program

Title: Gum Buster Machine Operator

Durango Business Improvement District’s (BID) Beautification and Cleaning programs are designed to make Downtown Durango look and feel better. BID seeks a dependable person to operate our Gum Buster machine, which removes gum from the sidewalks in Downtown. This position is part-time, two to three days a week, in the morning, for about three hours each day. Skills needed include having attention to detail, being a self-starter, and being good at problem solving. Being familiar with use of a generator, or having mechanical background, is a big plus. Must be able to lift between 50 and 60 pounds. Training provided.


Essential position functions: perform the safe operation of BID’s Gum Buster machine. This requires setting up the machine for operation with soap and water; putting gas in the generator; moving the machine (which is on a cart) to different parts of Downtown; and using the machine to remove pieces of gum stuck on sidewalk.  


Schedule: weekdays - Monday, Wednesday and Friday preferred

Time: mornings 7:30 to 10:30 am or 8 to 11 am

Job Type: part-time seasonal position, May through September, No benefits

 Salary: $11 per hour with potential increase for good performance

Job Location: Downtown Durango

Dress: uniform shirt and hat provided

Responsibilities and duties:

  1. Make sure Gum Buster machine is ready for operation each shift - check soap, water and gas levels.
  2. Clean a different section of Downtown sidewalks each day, and keep a record of what has been cleaned.
  3. Remove all gum marks from designated location.
  4. At the end of the shift, return machine, set up with soap, water and gas for next shift.
  5. Note any issues with the machine to management.
  6. Safety practices – be aware of people on the street and stop operation as needed when people are passing.
  7. Friendly to visitors as they pass. Answer questions as needed.
  8. Dress appropriately by wearing uniform, which will be a pullover polo shirt and hat.
