What inspired you to start your business?
I took a b&w film photography class in high school and fell in love. My original plan was to become a landscape photographer, but while in school earning my BA in photography, I discovered portrait photography and fell even more in love. My husband, Matt, convinced me to start our own studio versus working for another photographer. And here we are.
What is your motivation? What keeps you going and inspired each day?
I am living my dream, getting to pursue my passion and earn a living while doing that. If that doesn't keep you motivated and inspired, what would!? But really my clients motivate and inspire me. It's a collaborative process, creating portraits that capture my clients exactly how they want to be portrayed.
How did you wind up in Durango? What brought you here?
I grew up in Bayfield and couldn't wait to explore new places. I moved to Denver for school, then I brought my husband home for a holiday. He asked why we weren't living in Durango and a few months later we were here!
How do you support the community?
I love this community! We donate gift certificates for portraits to every fundraiser we are asked to contribute to and it's such an honor to provide those services knowing they benefit a cause or non profit. We work closely with the area high schools, providing our services at no cost whenever possible and offering internships and mentorships. We sponsor the Women's Resource Center. And we offer giveaways and discounts whenever possible as well!
What advice would you give to someone opening a new business in Durango?
Network! We have made so many friends and connections through networking via The Chamber of Commerce, YPOD, Professional Women's Network, WIE, DGO, BID and so on and so forth. These organizations are all great resources. And say yes to any opportunity that gets you out in front of the community.
Happiest moment as a business owner?
I have "happiest moments" as a business owner weekly, if not daily. Sometimes its a Google review from a happy client, a thank you card from an intern, winning one of the Best Photographers in Durango 8 years in a row and sometimes its just being grateful that we survived 2020.
