  Snowdown Events you don’t want to miss!

  There are so many fantastic events to choose from during the week of Snowdown.  We put together a list of some of our favorites. Be a participant or just go and watch, there is something for everyone!  Don’t forget to check out the full guide at Snowdown.org or pick up an official guide at Magpies Newsstand, 707 Main Avenue.

   

  Wednesday, January 31

  • Snowdown Fashion Do’s and Don’ts, noon - 1:45 pm, La Plata County Fairgrounds 2500 N. Main Avenue. Snowdown’s premier event that includes fabulous fashion food and fun festivities. This is an extremely popular event, so get your tickets early. Dining will start at noon and the fashion show begins at 12:30.   
  • Spellebration, 5:30 pm, Henry Strater Theater 699 Main Avenue. Teams of three will test their spelling abilities with cocktails and costumes in this fun, adult spelling bee. Entry fee for team of 3 is $200. Prizes awarded for 1^st, 2^nd, 3^rd place.
  • Magical Musical Mystery Tour, 6 pm, The Irish Embassy Pub 900 Main Avenue. Snowdown’s longest running music trivia contest. Teams of 4 will test their knowledge of music trivia in a variety of musical genres, from top 40 and heavy metal to classical to Broadway show tunes. Event cost is $40 for a team of 4.  
  • The Gong Show, 8 - 10 pm, Wild Horse Saloon 602 E. 2^nd Avenue.  This is a new event. Based on the 70’s hit show, the Gong Show is known for its absurdist humor and style with outlandish acts presented. Event cost is $10 for participants and $5 for spectators.

     

    Thursday, February 1

  • Big Wheel Derby, 12 pm at Balcony Bar & Grill Backstage 600 Main Avenue Suite 205. Contestants will take a timed lap around the balcony on a Big Wheel. If you haven’t seen an adult ride a Big Wheel before, come down and watch this pretty hilarious event.  
  • Elegant Hot Wing Eating Contest, 4 pm, Cuckoo’s Chicken House 128 E. College Drive. If you love hot wings this is the event for you. Drop by Cuckoo’s for the full set of contest rules. Limited to the first 20 entries. Event cost $8.
  • Dandy Doughnut Bobbing Contest, 6 pm at Rendezvous Doughnuts 139 E. 5^th Street. Show off your talents at this fun doughnut competition. Contestants will be challenged to eat one doughnut hanging from the ceiling as fast as you can - blindfolded, hands behind your back. Open to all ages. This event is free!
  • Drag Race & Fashion Show, 8 pm, El Rancho Tavern 975 Main Avenue.  Drag queens and kings come strut your stuff at this fun event. DJ party following the contest. Must be 21 to enter. Event is free.

   

  Friday, February 2

  • Snowdown Champagne Pong, 11:40 am, VFW 1550 Main Avenue. Hosted by The Wine Shop. A classier version of the traditional “beer pong” where contestants will be challenged to get their ball in the right glass. The last one standing will win. Entry fee includes plenty of bubbles and a delicious brunch. Come dressed to impress for this fun classy event. Event cost is $20.
  • Waiter/Waitress Race, 2 pm, Steamworks Brewing Company 801 E. 2^nd Avenue (in the alley) Coed teams of your favorite local servers from area restaurants compete in a fun and frequently messy obstacle course. Teams will be tested on their finest waiting skills including balance, speed, style and more. Event is free.
  • Snowdown Light Parade, 6 pm, Downtown Main Avenue. Durango’s only nighttime parade, where glamorous-themed lighted floats create dazzling displays. Parade starts out with a bang with a single firework to kick off the event.

   

  Saturday, February 3

  • Outlaw Josie Pete’s Golf Tournament, 12 pm, Main Mall Commons 835 Main Avenue. Come on down for a not-to-be-missed golf tournament, Snowdown style. This traveling event takes contests to different downtown establishments to find the next hole. Locations include: Carver Brewing Company, The Palace, The Irish Embassy, Balcony Backstage, The Diamond Belle, Lady Falconburg’s, Steamworks, Joel’s, The Elks Lodge, Derailed Pour House, Moe’s Lounge, El Moro Spirits and Tavern, Gazpacho’s, Brew Pub & Kitchen, The Red Snapper, Durango Craft Spirits, Wild Horse Saloon, Olde Tymers, El Rancho, Father Daughters Pizza, Cuckoos, Colorado Ponga’s, Fired Up Pizza and Ernie’s 11^th Street Station.
  • Snowdown Belt Sander Races, 1 pm, Kroeger’s Ace Hardware 8 Town Plaza. Contestants will race down a two lane, 50-foot track with their best creation. The first sander to reach the finish line will be the winner.
  • Human Foosball, 1 pm, Animas Brewing Company 1560 E. 2^nd Avenue. Teams of 5 will compete in a classic foosball tournament with a twist. Event entry is $5. This should be a fun event for spectators to watch.
  • Outhouse Stuffing, 1 pm, Gazpacho’s 431 E. 2^nd Avenue. Watch as teams compete to stuff as many people as they can in to a single outhouse in 2 minutes. This event is free to enter, and is a blast to watch!

   

  Sunday, February 4

  • La Plata Search and Rescue Pancake Breakfast, 7 am - noon at the La Plata County Fairgrounds 2500 N. Main Avenue (Exhibit Building). Come enjoy pancakes, ham,eggs, coffee and juice. It’s all you can eat. Supports Snowdown and La Plata County Search and Rescue. Tickets are $10 for adults, $6 for kids (6-12), 5 and under free.
